Beatriz Carvalho is a first-year PhD student researching violence against women in politics in Brazil. She is the recipient of a Dean's Fellowship from the School of Graduate Studies and a Presidential Fellowship. Beatriz is interested in how violence impacts the campaigning efforts of women politicians, and how it targets different groups of women in distinct ways. She is a researcher at the Observatory of Political and Electoral Violence in Brazil (OVPE/UNIRIO), where she analyzes quantitative data related to gender-based political violence. Before joining Rutgers, Beatriz earned a BA in Political Science from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) in Brazil and an MA in Latin American Studies with a minor in Gender Relations in International Development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Beatriz's commentaries on violence against women in politics can be read in Brazilian media outlets such as UOL, Brasil de Fato, and AgĂȘncia Lupa.
