Since August 2024, Omar has been an intern with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). There, he engages in critical work that supports the global agenda for sustainable development. His primary responsibility involves facilitating the organization of a high-level workshop focused on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This experience provided him the opportunity to contact government officials, UN representatives, and scholars in an effort to collectively explore innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. By managing logistical tasks, conducting research, and contributing to the development of a comprehensive guidebook on STI strategies, Omar has immersed himself in the intersection of technology and policy.
This internship complements his MA concentration in cybersecurity and counter-terrorism, discussions revolving around the advancement of digital technologies, and how the international community can implement them in the development of countries' economies, industry, and education are core to the work he does at the UN. The skills Omar is developing here range from project management to diplomatic communication, and they directly enhance his academic foundation and career goals. He aims to pursue a future in cybersecurity law, and this experience helps to solidify his understanding of how technology can be harnessed to achieve broader policy objectives. The opportunity to contribute to the UN’s mission inspires Omar and reinforces his commitment to bridging technology and policy for equitable outcomes on a global scale.
