Mouhammed Lamine Fofana started an internship at the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) of the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General (EOSG). Working primarily with the climate team, he has a firsthand view of the inner workings of the executive office, how it operates, its procedures and protocols. During the 73rd UN General Assembly meeting, there were several side events related to the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement to which Mouhammed contributed through provision of technical support, contacting and clearing for the event participating countries and organizations. On the topic of the Paris Climate Agreement, Mouhammed drafted and created a presentation for his supervisor about the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are at the core of the Paris Agreement. The presentation was aimed at informing the Political Unit of EOSG on the SDG and the Paris Agreement as a whole. During the presentation Mouhammed received credits for his work from his supervisor. In addition to regular office activities such as the research for content used for drafting daily briefs, presentations or speeches, Mouhammed has an opportunity to attend high-level meetings and conferences. One of such events was a conference organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the Small Islands and Developing States (SIDS) as their geographic locations make them extremely vulnerable to climate change, especially rising sea levels and hurricanes which consume much of their wealth.

After completing initial two months of full time internship, Mohammed received an offer to extend his time with the UN for three more months. ‘I have an opportunity to meet many people here - interns, staff members and members of delegations who are all very welcoming and helpful. In fact, I even met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of my country. His team suggested I join them after graduating and that is a path I intend to explore once I receive by UNMA degree in 2019’.
