Stephen Eric Bronner has long studied prejudice and human rights at Rutgers University, where he is a political science professor and director of global relations for the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights. He is also on the executive committee of the UNESCO Chair for Genocide Prevention. His new book, The Bigot: Why Prejudice Persists, explores why bigotry appeals to some people, and how it’s invariably a reaction to social progress. Our conversation has been edited for length.
