Selin Bengi Gümrükçü receives key appointment to global women's leadership cohort

Dr. Selin Bengi Gümrükçü, Lecturer in the Dept. of Political Science, has been appointed to the Institute for International Education's (IIE) Global Community for Women's Leadership. The IIE Global Community for Women’s Leadership is the first of its kind to cultivate a global network of women changemakers who have participated in international exchange opportunities. IEE states, "This unprecedented global network provides mentorship, resources, and skills development opportunities to help women step into and thrive in positions of leadership worldwide."

PhD Alumna first woman elected to represent Delaware District 14

Congratulations to Claire Snyder-Hall, for a decisive victory on November 5 for Delaware State House Representative (RD) 14. Rep. Snyder-Hall earned her Ph.D. in 1997 from Rutgers, with a dissertation entitled Citizens' Militias and 'Armed Masculinity': The Citizen-Soldier Ideal and Gender in the Civic Republican Tradition. She is the FIRST WOMAN elected to represent the people of RD 14 — Rehoboth Beach, Dewey, and the southern part of Lewes — in the DELAWARE STATE HOUSE.

The Department of Political Science extends a warm welcome to Jiří Kocián,  Assistant professor and co-chair  of the Department of Russian and EastEuropean Studies, Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague.  Prof. Kocián will be working with  Rutgers Distinguished Professor Jan Kubik through March 2025 so please don't be surprised if you see him around!

Rachel Toepfer, an Honors College student and political science major, discusses their summer internship for Senator Elizabeth Warren's office  in Springfield, Mass. Toepfer, a senior, also minoring in Women's Gender Studies, said the internship granted them better insight into how the federal government works. PhD Student Lü Pin, invited to be a member of the UN Women Leaders Network

The UN Women Leaders Network was launched this week on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly. It is the first permanent network of its kind, composed of intergenerational and intersectional women leaders, and its members represent the change needed in the traditional image of leadership today. The network includes both emerging and more established leaders across ages, regions, and professions. The network will work together to promote the increase and advancement of women in leadership and decision-making spaces worldwide, and functions as a platform to a diverse group of women leaders to discuss and exchange ideas, solutions and experiences as leaders, community-builders and decision-makers. Elena Gambino co-winner of 2024 Okin-Young Award in Feminist Political Theory

Assistant Professor Elena Gambino is the co-winner of the 2024 Okin-Young Award in Feminist Political Theory, in recognition of her article “Red Roots of Solidarity: Paula Gunn Allen and the Queer Audiences of Intellectual Sovereignty.” The article appeared in the Spring 2023 issue of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, and argues for understanding intellectual sovereignty—a framework that centers Native contexts as an ethical and political first frame—as an invitation into the coalitional possibilities for feminist, queer, and Native audiences. The Okin-Young Award in Feminist Political Theory is jointly given by the American Political Science Association's Women, Gender, and Politics Research Section, Foundations of Political Theory, and the Women’s Caucus for Political Science.
