CHARLES JACOB OBITUARY

Charles Jacob, the second chair of what was then called the New Brunswick Department of Political Science died suddenly on June 7th. He had just marked his 85th birthday.

Chuck, who retired from Rutgers in 1993 and will not be known by most members of the department, played an important role in the reorganization of political science at Rutgers and in the creation of the department as it is now constituted.

Chuck joined the Rutgers College department in 1967, having previously been at Vassar College for seven years. He attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell.  His teaching and scholarly fields were public administration and policy, and the presidency.

He was a good and loyal friend, a charming and excellent colleague, and even-tempered, judicious, and quick-witted – precisely the temperament needed to begin the difficult process of moving political science toward consolidation.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gale, two children, and two grandsons.

Chuck was one of the good guys.
