Synopsis: This course will exam the critical responses of five modern social and political thinkers to development of the modern world. We will view political, economic, social, and psychological dimensions of modernity in England, France and Germany through the perspectives of Max Weber, Karl Marx, Alexis de Tocqueville Friederich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud.
